KaWaii Diapers
If you’ve decided to use cloth diapers, there are several companies selling bulk diapers, depending on your budget, desire for flexibility and your interest that the diaper sport a snazzy design. One of the better-known and respected merchants is KaWaii Diapers in Canada. This private company was started some years ago in response to the founder’s distaste for the environmental disadvantages of disposable diapers. The aversion to the lengthy time for used, disposable diapers to decompose, plus the use of unfriendly chemicals in the manufacturing process is what encourages many of us to use organic materials.
An additional benefit over disposable diapers is that KaWaii diapers and other cloth wraps are less likely to cause diaper rash (although the disposable folks might dispute this, with the many improvements that have been made in that business). The purchase of a set of good-quality cloth diapers can last a long time—even subsequent children.
KaWaii diapers are custom-made in China just for them, and they reportedly ensure that the workplace is monitored and the employees are treated well. This company makes a strong effort to provide organic, environmentally responsible products and mentions some of the certifications on their website.
From what we have seen in reviews and forums, this diaper is pretty much as good as the more-expensive options, but is perhaps the cheapest of the legitimate cloth options. If you go too cheap, the material does not last long. The pricing seems to run around $6 to $11 for a very colorful outer cover and a couple of inserts. You’ll need a bunch, and may want to buy in bulk to get started. But the price for the KaWaii diapers is less than half of what we have seen elsewhere.
One tradeoff for the cheaper price is that there is only one size for newborns and very young kiddos, and that may be too large in some cases. Of course, if you buy some and they are a bit large, hang around a couple of months or so and they may fit just fine.
Here are some details about the more popular KaWaii diaper products.
Bamboo Minky. This literally uses fabric made from bamboo for the insert, which reportedly has better moisture absorption and ventilation. It is durable and biodegradable. You might double this insert in half for newborns. There is a very colorful outer cover made of minky, a polyester velour material that is very soft; this is laminated to a waterproof liner.
One-Size Goodnight Heavy Wetter. This outer shell is flexible to fit babies from 8-36 pounds, with different snap/buttons used depending on the size needed. The inserts are made from unbleached microfiber that is more absorbent than cotton. There are two inserts; use one for daytime but double up at night or for a heavy wetter.
One-Size Heavy Duty Suede Cloth liner. This is a cheaper KaWaii diaper product but still includes a waterproof outer cover and a number of handy features like the highly absorbent inserts and a Velcro closure strip to help fit smaller babies more easily. The minky outer covering is very soft, but does not include the waterproof layer. There are a total of 9 layers, including three outer layers and six layers of microfiber in the two inserts that fit inside.
There are other options of KaWaii diapers available. Your choice may come down to choices in colors, level of leak resistance and flexibility. Visit www.theluvyourbaby.com for additional details.
